Blanket Peat Restoration: Numerical Study of the Underlying Processes Delivering Natural Flood Management Benefits

چکیده

Restoration of eroded blanket peatlands through revegetation and gully blocking is observed to also deliver significant natural flood management (NFM) benefits (reduce delay floodpeaks). But there a lack clear understanding regarding how different catchment processes interact/counteract under each intervention scenario. We seek provide more insight by rigorously calibrating TOPMODEL rainfall-runoff model experimental catchments representing an Through numerical experimentation with the calibrated parameters, we estimate impact-magnitude processes. Our findings confirm NFM these restoration-focused interventions. In both interventions in our largest storms, reduced floodpeaks are primarily due surface roughness reducing floodwave speed thus thickening overland flow; conceptualize this as increase “kinematic storage.” Impact increasing kinematic storage very comparable that alone. Interventions' impact on “static storage” (interception + ponding evapotranspiration) becomes important for smaller storms. Although always lag times, they can be less effective peak magnitude when maximum rainfall intensity sustained durations longer than mean delay. propose two approaches further catchment's static storage. Finally, while field-scale study contributes evidence-base NFM's effectiveness, it provides basis modeling future. Such catchment-scale studies necessary extend spatial scales where flooding cause socioeconomic damage, tool optimizing distributed configuration

Restoration of blanket peatlands.

There is concern that ecosystem services provided by blanket peatlands have come under threat due to increasing degradation. Blanket peatlands are subject to a wide range of drivers of degradation and are topographically variable. As a result, many degradation forms can develop, including those resulting from eroding artificial drainage, incising gullies and areas of bare peat. Many degraded bl...

Runoff production in blanket peat covered catchments

[1] Blanket peat catchments exhibit flashy regimes, but little is known about the exact nature of runoff production processes within these catchments. Catchment, hillslope, and plot-scale monitoring results are presented from the blanket peats of the northern Pennines, United Kingdom. Catchment efficiency for three study catchments with areas of 11.4 km, 0.83 km, and 0.44 km were 72%, 77%, and ...

GSS Delivering The Benefits

Providing a level playing field has been discussed as a benefit of GSS. The concept of participation can be an influencing factor when deciding to use a GSS as a process to support group problem solving or gathering information. This paper will explore the issue of domination, participation and verbal communication by examining the GSS environment and making some comparisons to an equivalent ma...

Controls of soil pipe frequency in upland blanket peat

[1] Soil pipes were surveyed in 160 British blanket peat catchments using consistent application of ground-penetrating radar. Soil pipes were found in all catchments. The mean frequency of piping was 69 per kilometer of surveyed transect. Land management (moorland gripping) appears to exert the most important control on hillslope pipe frequency in blanket peats. Management practice in peatlands...
